Navigating through the folios

There are two ways in to the contents of the Great Parchment Book on this site.

• To browse the book, either click on one of the folio pages below or click on ‘Take a look inside the book’ from the Home page. You will be able to navigate from folio to folio using the ‘next’ or ‘previous’ buttons.
• If you are searching for the name of an individual or place or livery company, go to ‘Explore the Book’ or click on ‘People’, ‘Places’ or ‘Companies’ on the Home page. You can then search for your name using the alphabetical index and find the specific folio or folios containing that name.

Folio numbers

The Great Parchment Book consists of 165 individual folios or pieces of parchment. On this website, each side of each folio has been digitised and given a unique number reflecting three pieces of information:

• The livery company or area of Ulster to which the folio belongs (for example ‘A’ for Londonderry, ‘C’ for the Mercers’ Company etc)
• A unique running number within the sections for each folio.
• The ‘side’ of the folio displayed, ie whether it is ‘recto’ or ‘verso’. The recto side of the parchment would have been on the right hand side when the folios were bound into book form, and the verso on the left.
